Recommending funny books for kids is something I am regularly asked to do and The Day The Hiccups Took Over is a new favourite on this list. This gem of a book from author, Jo Simmons and illustrator, Lee Cosgrove is a brilliant laugh-out-loud story following Frank as he tries, and fails, to shake off an extremely terrible bout of hiccups!
These unshakeable hiccups seem to start at his feet, and are interfering with his very busy day. Not only does he have a trip to the dentist, a trumpet exam, a swimming trial, but he also has an event that he has been desperate to attend for months – the World Knitting Games.
If the hiccups weren’t enough of a problem, he has to keep his love of knitting a secret. His parents don’t know, and Cool Callum definitely can’t find out! Luckily, new girl, Daisy is on hand with some questionable hiccup cures! Can she help him to see that his love of knitting is something to be celebrated? Or will Frank continue to keep his talent a secret?
Why we love it here at TBD
A gentle message about acceptance and being yourself is at the heart of this story. Through Daisy’s friendship and his parents’ encouragement, Frank learns to embrace and share his passion. He learns that being yourself can be truly amazing, even though it might feel a bit scary at first. One of my favourite moments in the book is between Frank and Cool Callum, it offers a great talking point about character development. Readers can reflect on their own friendships, and why it’s important to feel accepted. I also love how many opportunities there are to bring this book to life through drama.
This book is published by the brilliant Barrington Stoke it has a dyslexia friendly format so even more readers can enjoy it.
I highly recommend this book and think it’s a great choice when you’re searching for funny books for kids. I loved it so much that I have included it in one of my mini cases. Check it out here.
